Here's something a little different. Remember Mama's molasses cookies? Try these...they're just as soft and rich-tasting as we remember.

What You'll Need

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

What to Do

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the sugar, oil, and egg. Dissolve the baking soda in 1 tablespoon hot water and add to the sugar mixture. Add the molasses, cold water, cloves, cinnamon, and salt; mix well. Add the flour gradually, mixing well.
  3. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets and bake until firm, no more than 10 minutes. Remove from the cookie sheets and let cool.

The cookies tasted flat to me, and I immediately realized there was no salt in them. I agree with Crafter17792....there needs to be a little salt added, what she recommended or even a teaspoonful. With all the cookies it makes, there'd hardly be any salt in any one cookie, but the flavor is not as good as it would be if salt were added.

Hello! Thank you for your comment. We've reviewed the recipe and determined that it does need a little bit of salt to make it absolutely perfect. You'll find that a 1/2 teaspoon has been added. Thanks again, and enjoy!

@pizzamama, I noticed that there is no salt in the recipe. I would add 3/4tsp for a recipe with this amount of flour. I think that is why you said that they tasted like flour,I would also add 1/4 tsp of ground ginger as well. Hope this helps.

These were tasty. The batch makes a LOT of cookies. I had at least 4 dozen and they took a long time to eat. They were very rich, too. Thanks Mr. Food!

Something was missing. The dough was VERY soft and the finished cookie tasted like flour. Won't make again.
