The spotlight continues to shine on our #NurseLeaders and the important role they play in patient care. We are #BeyondGratitude for all of them, including Scott, Nurse Manager in Trauma-Surgical who’s been a member of our team for 18 years. Scott began his career here as a Monitor Technician and Nurse Technician, where his passion for trauma patients first grew. With support from leaders at UT Medical Center, he decided to pursue Nursing Leadership in 2016 and leapt at the opportunity to serve in the Trauma unit. As a Nurse Manager Scott says he must wear many different hats. “We are in charge of daily operations of the unit and manage schedules, budgets, quality, safety, and efficiency of the unit. We constantly work on projects to ensure our patients are getting the best care and the staff are feeling supported,” he said. “My favorite part of the job is seeing patients recover from terrible injuries,” Scott said. “A lot of our patients have never been sick before and to see them heal from one of their worst experiences is rewarding. We see patients who haven’t walked in weeks take their first steps as they relearn things we take for granted daily.” His appreciation for healing after trauma became especially profound after his father suffered a stroke three years ago and was treated at UT Medical Center. “It’s different when you are on the other side and you are the family of the patient coming in,” Scott said. “To see the teamwork that took place from the time he came through our emergency room doors to the time he WALKED out of the hospital was amazing. It was a severe stroke that most people do not fully recover from as he was not able to speak or move his entire right side. Three days after his admission, he walked out of the hospital with no residual effects from the stroke“ he said. “Today, 3 years later, my dad is doing fantastic and is living a healthier lifestyle than ever before. All the credit goes to the fantastic team that took care of him here,” Scott added. Scott says that, if anyone asks, he is always proud to say that he works for The University of Tennessee Medical Center. It includes four, one-day sessions over a four-month period. This fast-paced curriculum spotlights experts within our hospital who discuss foundational tools and share insights on management concepts, such as team building, conflict management, strategic retention, hiring and creating a culture of wellness.
